Glacier Hills Retirement Community

Glacier Hills is a not-for-profit organization serving older-adults that provides a variety of living environments and services which promote enrichment of mind, body and spirit, and compassionate care.

In the mid 1960s, Dr. Ralph Piper, pastor of the Zion Lutheran Church, and other church leaders had a vision to create a community for older adults in Ann Arbor, one which would provide gracious living, health care, security, socialization, and meals served in an elegant dining room.

In October 1973, the Lutheran Retirement Center opened its doors with 226 apartments and a 70-bed nursing center, situated on 34 acres in a charming residential neighborhood of northeast Ann Arbor.

Nine years later, the Board of Directors repurchased the outstanding stock issued to the Zion Lutheran Church and changed the name to Glacier Hills, Inc. to emphasize the non-sectarian character and culture of the retirement community.

In 1990, the nursing center responded to the growing community's need and more than doubled its size. In 1996, Glacier Hills opened its innovative sub acute wing of the nursing center, providing an important bridge between hospital and home.

In 2002, Glacier Hills' newest neighborhood, The Meadows, designed for active, independent older adults, proved to be a new step in Glacier Hills' pathway along a continuum of care.

Glacier Hills continues to be Washtenaw County's only not-for-profit, non-sectarian, locally managed, Life·Care continuing care retirement community.
